With the fall of communism in the 1990s many individuals working for the K.G.B. became wealthy and famous, such as Vladamir Putin, if they had the right connections and ruthless attitude. However, not all of those in the K.G.B. were so lucky. Some had created enemies with the new corrupt regime, and their ownly recourse was to go into hiding, to save their families from retaliation. Even with Papa Tupolev being a decorated cosmonaut, it wouldn't be enough to ensure the family's safety. Only with Valentina disappearing can she ensure that her husband, and her daughters, live without fear of retaliation.
