Description

As Mitzi serves his coffee and cookie, it’s a good time to introduce Charlie Cheeseman, ace investigative reporter for the Bumcrack Herald and Times. Born the illegitimate son of Wilmer Wright, a ‘good time girl’ at the Bumcrack Barber Shop Bar and Grill, Charlie was unexpected adopted by City Mayor Orville Cheeseman and his wife Betsy, just days after his birth. This act of ‘generosity’ was viewed with some suspicion in the town, as the Mayor was noted for his twice weekly haircuts despite being nearly bald. Charlie was a moderately intelligent child and just made the entrance requirements of Bumcrack High where he first became aware of the Boomer family. David Boomer was a few years older than Charlie and there wasn’t any socialising with the ‘big boys’ but he did get to know Ella after the infamous events of the ’74 Graduation Ball and even took her for a burger and Coke at the grill once but unfortunately splattered her blouse with sauce when shaking the stupid tomato shaped dispenser. The relationship went no further. After graduating with the lowest possible grades Charlie got his first job on the ‘H&T’. His first two years were spent mainly waiting by a phone to take classified ads (he particularly liked those for the ‘personal services’ section which filled most of the back page, but never summoned up the courage to enrol for French Lessons) and going to the bar to get bottles of whisky for the two reporters. When one of them unexpectedly suffered a heart attack and died at the Barber Shop, Charlie became a cub reporter. After a few years of following births, marriages and deaths along with contests for biggest melons and suggestive vegetables, Charlie realised the Barber Shop didn’t seem to be a very healthy place to go. Eighteen months of investigation pointed to ‘sweet little’ Ella Boomer having taken over the girls who sometimes worked front of house, but more often were earning ‘behind closed doors’. Chances of an early prosecution were low, as Police Chief Kayden was known to have ‘dealings’ with a girl called Noa.
